Who You Are

We are seeking a motivated, innovative and experienced Vice President of Intellectual Property (“VP of IP”) with high technical competency in the life science industry to join the dynamic Legal & Compliance team at BridgeBio. This position will offer the right legal leader an amazing opportunity to formulate and execute a strategic vision to protect and advance the company’s current and future intellectual property portfolio.

Reporting to the Chief Legal Officer, the VP of IP will work in partnership with various senior leaders and the Legal IP team to design, develop and drive implementation of intellectual property strategy aligned with the company’s overall strategic directives.  Key responsibilities of the position include identifying and pursuing strategies to capture innovations in the Company’s research and development activities, communicating IP guidance and risks to legal and business teams, and managing the Company’s intellectual property affairs (e.g., client counseling, licensing and other complex business transactions, patent prosecution and enforcement, IP disputes or litigation, due diligence and competitive intelligence, IP spend, trademark matters, and opinion work).  They will be an integral working partner with the company’s research and development functions, business development team, and legal colleagues.  The VP of IP will also supervise an experienced senior patent agent (PhD, Chemistry) and patent paralegal and be responsible for fostering career development of the team.  

Responsibilities

  • Work with stakeholders to develop and implement global IP strategies 
  • Lead legal activities for the company’s 20+ pipeline programs across patents and trade secrets globally 
  • Establish governance and initiatives to help unlock and ensure capture of innovation 
  • Create and implement global strategies to develop patent portfolios that provide value and protect pharmaceutical product lifecycles 
  • Protect and defend the company’s IP, anticipate IP disputes, strategize risk mitigation, and manage effective litigation when necessary
  • Negotiate IP terms of licensing and other agreements (e.g., MTAs, CTAs, SRAs) 
  • Counsel science and business colleagues with regards to patentability, freedom-to-operate, IP risks, and other intellectual property matters  
  • Keep abreast of legal trends, laws and regulations; advise on emerging legal issues in the area of intellectual property to ensure innovative and cutting-edge approaches  
  • Work closely with IP team, outside counsel, and research and clinical development teams to evaluate and support the development of new technologies, and to provide IP training, generate new ideas and harvest new inventions 
  • Contribute to and maintain positive relationships, foster a cohesive, committed team environment and drive effective partnership with cross-functional teams

Education, Experience & Skills Requirements

  • Education: Successful completion of a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school 
  • Bar Admission: USPTO bar admission and active membership in good standing with the bar association of the state where practicing 
  • Experience: 
    • Advanced scientific degree and 15+ years of proven IP legal experience 
    • Prior in-house experience at a biotech or pharmaceutical public company is strongly preferred 
    • PhD in chemistry, biochemistry, or related field strongly preferred 
    • Experience practicing or managing biotech patent litigation strongly preferred
    • Proven senior level leadership experience, including managing people/teams, managing outside counsel and spend, and overseeing high volume intellectual property workflow
    • Deep knowledge of the industry, including R&D, regulatory, manufacturing, and commercial aspects
    • Ethical and mission driven team player with excellent interpersonal capabilities and the capacity to strategically educate and support fellow team members; strong internal and external relationship-building skills, with the ability to convey legal matters clearly and inspire trust and confidence
    • Outstanding skills in organization, problem-solving, and analysis 
  • Communication Skills:Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills; articulate, direct and forthright; ability to communicate with all levels of management and leadership; collaborative and decisive team member as well as a strategic thinker with a broad perspective

  • Strategic Vision and Collaboration: Ability to align legal strategies with business objectives, contributing to the company’s growth and success, and ability to work collaboratively and cross-functionally with internal teams, external advisors, and stakeholders 
  • Attention to Detail: Meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy in legal research, documentation, and compliance 
  • Adaptability: Agility to adapt to changing legal and regulatory landscapes, while remaining current with industry trends and best practices; time management and organizational skills necessary to independently manage many matters, appropriately prioritize workload, and plan for resources to meet deadlines and goals

At BridgeBio, we strive to provide a market-competitive total rewards package, including base pay, an annual performance bonus, company equity, and generous health benefits. Below is the anticipated salary range for candidates for this role who will work in California. The final salary offered to a successful candidate will depend on several factors that may include but are not limited to the type and length of experience within the job, type, and length of experience within the industry, educational background, location of residence and performance during the interview process. BridgeBio is a multi-state employer, and this salary range may not reflect positions based in other states.
